New Jerusalem
The Museum of History, Art and Architecture “New Jerusalem” was founded in the territory of the former “New Jerusalem” Resurrection monastery in 1920. It is one of the largest museums in the vicinity of Moscow. It stores enormous historic, cultural and artistic treasures, such as icons, embroidery, castings, manuscripts, rare books, documents, Russian and West-European paintings and drawings, as well as applied art. The “New Jerusalem” Resurrection (Voskresenskiy) monastery is a unique phenomenon in Russian culture. Its brave and daring concept belongs to its founder Patriarch Nikon (1605-1681) who decided to recreate the Holy Land of the Christians by building the exact replica of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre with its topography and relics near Moscow.
